From Goodison Park to the Mersey

For over 130 years, Everton played at Goodison Park, the ‘Grand Old Lady’ of English football. The move was an emotional transition for the fanbase. However, the new site at Bramley-Moore Dock has provided the club with a platform for the modern era.

The engineering feat required to build here was immense; the old dock basin had to be filled with 450,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from the Irish Sea before construction could even begin.

The stadium’s name honours a historic Liverpool institution. Hill Dickinson, a commercial law firm founded in the city in 1810, signed a landmark naming rights deal that perfectly ties the club’s future to the city’s maritime legal roots.

A Masterpiece of Urban Design

A birds-eye view of the stadium from a drone over the water.

With a capacity of over 52,000, the stadium delivers an unparalleled match-day experience. The architect, Dan Meis, designed the ground to be ‘intimate and intimidating’. The standout feature is undoubtedly the South Stand, known as the ‘Home End’.

This is a massive, single-tier stand holding 13,000 supporters, designed to create a concentrated ‘wall of sound’ that is almost unique in the Premier League.

Excellent sightlines from every corner of the ground ensure that visitors feel fully immersed in the action, whether they are lifelong season-ticket holders or first-time spectators.

The steep seating bowl ensures that fans are as close to the pitch as modern safety regulations allow, preserving the intense atmosphere that made Goodison Park so famous.

More Than Just a Football Ground

The Hill Dickinson Stadium is far more than a sports venue; it is a year-round cultural hub. It was built with world-class acoustics in mind, and an Everton fan of my acquaintance mentioned that the internal sound system is second-to-none.

This makes it an ideal venue for major concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. In fact, it has already been selected as a host venue for the UEFA Euro 2028 tournament, putting it on the global map of elite stadiums.

The ‘Fan Plaza’ outside the stadium, roughly the size of the Pier Head, provides a vast public space that can host markets, screen events, and provide a gathering point for the community even on non-match days.

Celebrating Maritime Heritage

Located at Bramley-Moore Dock, the stadium offers spectacular views of the River Mersey while celebrating the area’s industrial past. The exterior design uses brick, glass, and steel to echo the surrounding Victorian warehouses.

The restored Hydraulic Tower and other original dock features have been integrated into the site, ensuring that the ‘Blue’ future of the area remains firmly rooted in its ‘Grey’ industrial history.

Its position on the waterfront provides easy access to Liverpool’s wider attractions. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk along the river to the Royal Albert Dock, home to the Beatles Story and Tate Liverpool, making it a perfect anchor point for a full day out in the city.
