Eating in the UK’s Best Restaurant: Southport’s Volare

Eating out alone on a Monday night is probably not the pinnacle of anyone’s social diary. But these are the sacrifices I make for this blog! Woe is me, dear reader. Woe is me. I found myself in Southport town centre at a loose end and I thought it would be remiss of me not to check out Volare.

Recently crowned the Best Restaurant in the U.K. by the S.B.A. Small Business Awards, my curiosity was piqued.

What Is the Food Like in Volare?

I had been to Volare before, but in its previous incarnation before the premises expanded. The expansion has done no harm to the atmosphere or the food, which was fantastic!

When I was greeted, I was a little unsure if they were going to have a table for me. The lady who greeted me needed to confirm that a table for one was indeed viable. After that, all interactions with the staff were kind and conducive.

I ordered the Cotoletta Milanese, which was a veal scallop, breadcrumbed and shallow fried. This was served with a delicious, fresh salad and a hefty amount of potatoes and vegetables.

I took the time while my meal was being cooked to look up the meaning of Volare. Apparently it means to ‘fly, or soar’. I was hoping the sky was the limit for the tastiness of my food!

I like being asked if my meal is fine, because it opens up the possibility of facilitating improvement if needed. In this case, I was asked two or three times (by different members of service staff).

But it didn’t seem to be in a pandering, I-am-doing-this-because-my-boss-said-so kind of way. They seemed to genuinely care about my enjoyment of the food.

The veal was lovely and tender, and the salad was a perfect balance to the amount of veal. The breadcrumbs were fine and light and just the right side of crunchy. The vegetables were the perfect accompaniment for ensuring that I left the restaurant full and happy.

Final Thoughts on Volare Southport

For a restaurant with awards coming out of its restaurant-ears, the food was incredible value-for-money. It makes me happy to see a business on Lord Street doing so well. I hope other businesses can see that there are still opportunities on the high street.

In the meantime, congratulazioni, Volare, on your win. I feel your continued presence is a win for Southport, too!
