Chester is among the top 5 most beautiful cities in the North West of England. With its Tudor frontages and delightful Roman city walls, there is a lot to discover on a day out to Chester before ever putting a hand in your pocket. The city racecourse, the Roodee, is clearly visible from the city walls, so you can fantasise about being putting bets on the horses and not worry too much if you back a loser.

Or why not take a stroll down the gorgeous, wide, fast-flowing River Dee? With plenty of ice creams vendors on hand, it is the perfect place to watch life go by with a cone in hand.

A walk around the Chester’s city walls is a good way to stretch the legs, but the terrain can be bumpy and stairs are involved, so I would not recommend it to those with accessibility issues. However, on a sunny day, it can be a beautiful viewpoint to get a different perspective of Chester, and see it from the Roman point-of-view.

Shopping is a also a wonderful way to pass the time in Chester. If you feel like abusing your credit cards, the city is home to many boutiques and upmarket ateliers. Don’t forget to check out The Rows, shops on the second level above the streets around The Cross in the centre of Chester..

Everywhere you turn in Chester, another piece of history awaits. The city centre is like something from a fairy tale. As someone who studied for four years in Chester, I am obviously biased, but on subsequent returns to the city, I have always been excited by my companions’ reactions of thrill and wonder. Bring stout shoes and a flask of whatever walking fuel takes your fancy!
