Old Trafford (Manchester United stadium)

If David Beckham, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo or Bruno Fernandes mean anything to you, there is a good chance that you have a Manchester United football fan in the family. Although the team’s recent form has been underwhelming, the fans have a lot of reminiscences to fall back on. The 1999 team won a then-unprecedented treble of league, FA Cup, and Champions League titles, resulting in them being among the greatest footballers to grace the English game.

Old Trafford, often dubbed ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ has been the home stadium of Manchester United since 1910. Over the decades it has morphed into the behemoth of a stadium it is today, with a capacity of more than 74,150, as of 2026. There are plans afoot to build a new stadium, more befitting of the modern era. It is unlikely Old Trafford will be demolished, given its history and cultural significance to the area, but now is the best time to visit this iconic stadium while it is still both a working sports ground, and a hallowed ground for local and international football fans.

WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR FREE

Old Trafford stadium is a good day out for fans of Manchester United, and for neutrals alike. This is due to the fact that most football fans will want to say that they have been there. This is reflected in the fact that there is a LOT of culture to be seen, simply by walking around the stadium perimeter. Looking at the statues and the moving tribute to the young footballers (The Busby Babes) who died in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, there is much to take in.

WHAT WILL COST YOU MONEY

The Manchester United Official Store

Like most Premier League teams, Manchester United’s merchandise is on the expensive side. The official store has replica team uniforms, fashionwear, and everything that you can possibly stick a club crest on. During match days, the store gets very busy and has a long queueing system which moves remarkably quickly, considering the thronging it gets.

Try entering the official store and guessing what you can’t find an official Manchester United crest glued to! It’s mind-boggling the variety of things that someone decided needed to be United-ified.

The Manchester United Museum & Tour

The Manchester United Museum and Tour are focused on true fans of the club, and those who take the tour are richly rewarded with insights into behind the scenes gossip from an in-the-know tour guide, a visit to the iconic Old Trafford pitch, a chance to sit in the United subsitutes area, and a walk out to the pitch from the famous red players tunnel. Tour and museum bookings are through the offical Manchester United website.

I’m Mark

Welcome to my blog. When my girlfriend came to visit me in England, I wanted to find cool places to take her that were a little different from the norm and do things that would create good memories for her.

We also realised that the price of a day out rarely had anything to do with the quality of the experience. Cheap days out were often more fun than expensive tours or fancy places. With that in mind we set up this blog for you to enjoy your days out in the North West, whether it is solo, as a couple, as a family, or retirees at a more leisurely pace.

Please let us know of any places we should check out at: northwestdaytrips@gmail.com
